Breasts can be made larger by placing an implant either under the breast tissue or behind the muscle on which the breast lies. Implants are usually inserted through incisions in the fold under the breast (i.e. inframammary fold). Alternatively, the incisions may be made around the areola or in the armpit.
Breast reduction can help women who are unhappy with the shape, weight or droop of their breasts by making them smaller and more lifted. But if it’s done to improve appearance rather than for health reasons, it’s not normally available on the NHS. Instead, you’ll need to pay for the procedure privately.
Various reasons behind making the breast pendulous are pregnancy, age, and the effects of gravity that can stretch the breast’s supporting ligaments. Breasts that appear deflated and droopy can affect body image and reduce a patients confidence. If you’re unhappy with the shape of your breasts and the way they are positioned on the body, breast uplift operation is an option.
Male Breast Reduction
In male breast reduction which is known as Gynaecomastia this condition can be caused by a hormone imbalance or from being very overweight, which can increase levels of oestrogen and cause breast tissue to grow. Breast reduction operation is an option for men with gynaecomastia. It may also be used to tighten the breast area after significant weight loss that has caused the skin to sag.
The lifetime of most implants is considered to be 10 – 15 years and they do have a finite life span. Many women will eventually want them removed or replaced (see Implant replacement). Most often the reason for removal is capsular contracture, where scar tissue develops around the implant. This will distort the breast and often in severe types can cause pain.
Many women will want to exchange their breast implants if they are suffering from capsular contracture which can result in pain and distortion of the breast or they are unhappy with the shape and aesthetic appearance of the breast. Those who are wishing to have smaller, natural breasts may choose to opt for implant removal instead of replacement.
