Patients treated with radio-frequency ablation(RFA) or laser treatment may resume normal activities more quickly than patients who undergo conventional treatment. With the RFA procedure, the average patient typically returns to normal activities within few days. Patients treated with Venaseal procedure(Bio-glue) may return to their normal activities soon after surgery with no need for compression stockings.

Healthy veins contain one-way valves that open and close to assist blood is returning to the heart. Any condition that results in the malfunction of these valves will result in a reflux of the blood away from the heart toward the legs. This in turn puts pressure on smaller veins and ultimately results in the formation of varicose veins.

In a vast majority of cases, patients with varicose veins are usually symptoms free and the main complaint often relates to how unaesthetic the condition is. Dependent on the degree of incompetence and the specific type of varicose veins the patient is suffering from symptoms may include: aching, pain, itchiness, swollen and heavy limbs especially post strenuous activities. If this condition remains untreated it can result in a brownish pigmentation of the skin, dryness and thinning of the skin, phlebitis and eventually ulceration.

What can be seen on the surface of the skin is only the tip of the iceberg in essence; the real problem usually lies deeper within the skin in bigger veins. The modern treatment of varicosities is based on a good understanding of the direction of blood flow in these veins. The use of Ultrasound scanning of the limbs can show the actual flow and any abnormalities present in the vein, which aids the specialist in diagnosis and proper treatment of the patient. A majority of cases involve the sealing of the culprit's vein via radiofrequency ablation or laser treatment. These procedures are minimally invasive and are done under local anaesthetic. These could be combined with Sclerotherapy (injection of chemicals into the vein which makes it disappear) or multiple avulsion: the removal of the vein via tiny incisions.
