Sclerotherapy or injection of varicose veins is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of your varicose veins. The veins are injected with a solution called a sclerosant which damages the internal lining of the vein and causes blood clotting within the vein.
In time, your own body will then destroy the vein and it will disappear. The solution normally used for this procedure is called sodium tetradecyl sulphate (STD) and is available in different concentrations depending on the size of the vein being treated.
Normally STD is injected as a solution directly into the vein to be treated. Foam sclerotherapy involves making small volumes of the solution into foam by rapid mixing and agitation with a small volume of air. This can then be used to treat some of the larger underlying abnormal veins which would not normally be treated with conventional sclerotherapy.
This is performed under ultrasound control. The foam solution causes intense spasm of the vein and a greater volume can be injected without using too much of the STD solution.
Microsclerotherapy
Microsclerotherapy treatment for thread veins involves injecting a small amount of a sclerosant into the inside of the thread veins using a very fine needle.
No local anaesthetic is required and only minimal discomfort is experienced during the procedure. Several veins can be treated at a time, however multiple thread veins on both legs may require treatment on more than one occasion.
Dressings and a compression bandage are applied for some patients following the treatment..
Radiofrequency energy is used to treat the superficial veins.
A catheter is inserted into the veins under ultrasound guidance, and passed close to the junction of superficial and deep veins. The vein is numbed by applying local anesthetic at the site of entry and along the veins, the thermal energy is then used to permanently seal the veins this is same principle as laser Treatment.
Smaller veins in the calf or thigh are collapsing spontaneously in a majority of cases they can be treated 8-10 weeks following the procedure with foam sclerotherapy.
The procedure is virtually pain free and patients are resuming their normal activities almost immediately following the procedure.
This is a convenient way to treat the varicose vein as there is no need for general anesthestetic . North West vein clinic has already treated hundreds of varicose vein using the VNUS closure system with very high satisfaction rates and good outcomes.
