Who can have this?

People with a BMI over 27 that cannot manage/ maintain their weight with diet and exercise alone
People with BMI over 40 that require Bariatric surgery and need to reduce their surgical and anaesthetic risk
No significant associated gastro – oesophageal pathology -known or discovered during endoscopy .

What happens after the insertion?

Will start liquid diet and slowly progress to a normal diet but smaller portions
Exercise and diet are recommended in order to achieve maximum weigh loss
Most weight is lost in the first three months- the next 3 months are more for consolidation of this result and help achieving a life style change.
A dietitian and doctor will organise follow up 24, 48 and 1 week after the procedure. Further follow ups will be offered if required .
The ballon will need to be removed endoscopically after 6 or 12 months regardless of the weight loss.

Will I feel sick after?

Nausea is a frequent side effect in the first few days until the stomach is getting used to the presence of the ballon
Antisickness medication will be prescribed before and after the insertion to prevent and address nausea.

What happens is I don’t tolerate the balloon?

This is totally reversible , in other words the balloon can be removed any time and no later than 6 or 12 months depending on the product you choose.
If you develop persistent symptoms after the insertion or you simply cannot tolerate it can have an endoscopy and have the ballon removed .( before doing that your doctor might do a few tests to rule out other causes for your symptoms )
